Salinas
Yesterday we sailed into Salinas after a nine hours trip from Vieques. When we approached Salinas, we were met by calm waters and mangrove swamps. After anchoring, we watched a movie and went to sleep. The next day, we went exploring. First, we filled gasoline on our dinghy at he marina. They filled 15 liters on our 12 liter tank. Not bad!
Afterwards, we tried to locate a supermarket. The closest one was "Selectos", 3 kilometers from the marina. We put on our flip-flops and started walking. We passed several houses with tiny, annoying guard dogs, like chihuauas. We ignored them, and eventually asked a local guy for directions. He said it was a very long walk to Selectos, at least ten minutes!
We survived the walk. We even saw a dead iguana on the road.
The Selectos was very big, and had a good selection of goods. We found all the ingridients for five days of dinner on board Emma. Most of the stuff was reasonably priced, unlike St. Croix. We even got 1.75 l of coke for $0.95. Great buy!
With the bags full of groceries, we started our long journey back to the marina. Halfway, a nice guy in a pick-up truck pulled over and asked if we were sailors. We said yes, and he told us to hop in. He moved here two years ago, and he liked to help foreigners.
He told us that the local sailor's pub, Sal Pa' Dentro, opened again tonight, after being restored from a fire a couple of months ago. He wanted to meet us there. We said yes to the invitation, and had a great time at the bar. Both local people and cruisers tied their boats up at the dock around the pub, and went ashore for drinks. It was quite different from back home.
After a while, we got tired of partying, and headed home to our Norwegian embassy, S/Y Emma. We watched yet another movie (Gran Torino), and went to sleep.
